The History of Delhi

“Time creates all things and time destroys them all. Time burns all creatures and time again extinguishes that fire.”

This is one of the many famous quotes of Mahabharata that has echoed through the walls of Indraprastha for centuries. Through all this time, the city has changed its name and face but still remains in the heart of those who have inhabited it. Delhi, the national capital of India, has been a political center most of its existence. Many mighty emperors invaded and built their empires in and around Delhi, destroying and rebuilding the city in the process. Tomar clan of Rajputs ruled Delhi and its surrounding areas for more than 4 centuries, making them the only dynasty in history to have done so. Following their reign, Delhi Sultanate was formed and Mughal Empire ruled the place for 3 centuries.

Under the rule of the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, the walled city of Shahjahanabad was built which marked its territory by the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. After the demise of Shah Jahan’s successor, Aurangzeb, the decline of the Mughal Empire began, and post a series of wars between the Marathas, Sikhs, and the British, and shifting powers between the three, Delhi was ultimately captured by the British East India Company which began a direct rule in the country. The British also formed the inner city called New Delhi which was designed by Edwin Lutyens.

Delhi has had many cities through centuries and most of them can be visited on a 5-day golden triangle tour India. The cities are Indraprastha, Anangpur, and Lalkot.
